Within a few weeks of Captain Kidd's execution on May 23rd 1701, the song "As I Sailed, As I Sailed" was being sung heartily in the dockside taverns of London and Bristol. Later old seadogs and tars added their own verses whilst on their voyages around the world. The legend surrounding Captain Kidd, his secret island and his buried treasure had been born . . . .
