The 14th century church (built 200 years before Columbus set sail!!)  lies adjacent to Birtsmorton Court. There is a private gate leading from the grounds of the Court to the church yard.  Bellomont would have worshipped at the church, and no doubt prayed here for divine guidance before leaving to take up his appointment in America.
The grave of his youngest son, also named Richard (Third Earl of Bellomont), lies in a prominent position in the churchyard, and is subject to another mystery surrounding the Bellomont/Kidd saga.
